FAQ
Detailing questions, answered
The questions Keller drivers and boaters ask us most often — straight answers, no upsell.
How long does ceramic coating last on a boat?
A quality marine ceramic coating typically lasts 1 to 3 years on a boat, depending on UV exposure, how often the boat is in the water, the water chemistry, and how it's stored. Boats kept covered or stored indoors between trips will see the coating last toward the upper end of that range.
Does ceramic coating protect paint from sun?
Yes. Ceramic coatings provide UV protection that significantly reduces oxidation and fading from sun exposure. They do not make paint sunproof — extreme, constant exposure still slowly degrades any finish — but compared to wax or unprotected clear coat, a ceramic coating dramatically slows UV damage.
How long does paint correction last?
The correction itself is permanent — the defects you remove don't grow back. New swirls and scratches can be introduced by poor wash technique or automated car washes. Most clients pair correction with a ceramic coating to lock in the corrected finish for years.
How long does ceramic coating last on headlights?
On clear, properly prepped polycarbonate headlights, a ceramic coating typically lasts 1 to 2 years. Headlights face direct UV and a lot of road debris, so the lifespan is usually shorter than coatings on painted body panels.
How long does ceramic coating last on wheels?
Wheel-specific ceramic coatings usually last 1 to 2 years. Wheels endure brake dust, heat, and harsh road chemicals, so they wear faster than body panels — but a coating makes brake dust rinse off easily and protects the finish from etching.
How long does ceramic coating last on rims?
Rims and wheels are the same component — see above. Expect 1 to 2 years from a wheel-grade ceramic with normal driving. Track use or aggressive brake compounds will reduce that.
How do you protect boat fiberglass?
Start with a thorough wash and decontamination. Compound and polish to remove oxidation and restore the gel coat. Then apply a marine ceramic sealant or coating to provide UV and water protection. Storing the boat covered or indoors between uses extends every step of this.
What is ceramic coating made of?
Most modern ceramic coatings are liquid polymers based on silicon dioxide (SiO₂) and sometimes silicon carbide (SiC). When applied to clean paint and cured, they cross-link into a hard, transparent layer that bonds chemically to the clear coat — that's why they outlast waxes and sealants by years.
